                                                    Sugar in  Urine during Pregnancy

A warning sign of gestational diabetes is sugar in urine during pregnancy.  This can be tested during a regular visit to a healthcare provider during the course of the pregnancy.  Gestational diabetes can occur in pregnant women who have a family history of diabetes or who are obese.  Gestational diabetes can normally be detected during the sixth month of pregnancy, but sugar in urine during pregnancy can show up earlier.  If sugar is detected in the urine, then it is a generally a good idea to take an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) or  blood sugar test in pregnancy so as to make certain that the issue is gestational diabetes.

High sugar in urine is a result of high amounts of glucose in the blood.  If not enough insulin is being produced to allow the glucose to pass through the tissues and organs in the body, then it remains in the blood.  In turn, some of it will pass through the digestive system and be flushed out of the system through urination.

Gycolsuria

This is the medical term for high sugar levels in the urine.  During pregnancy the hormones of the body cause changes in the way that the body functions.  It is not unusual for a pregnant woman to have sugar in the urine because of normal adjustments.  It is a good idea to test for gestational diabetes if at any time during the pregnancy there is any level at all of sugar in the urine.  Be sure to avoid high concentrations of sugar during pregnancy, whether or not there is sugar in urine during pregnancy.

Symptoms of gestational diabetes

Aside from sugar in urine during pregnancy, there are other symptoms of gestational diabetes.  These symptoms include fatigue, sickness (nausea), vision problems, excessive thirst, weight loss and infections (bladder, skin and vaginal).  The other symptoms may arise prior to the sixth month of pregnancy, and they should be taken seriously.  If these symptoms are left untreated, then it may cause problems with the pregnant mother during the delivery, or worse, with the baby.

Causes

As stated above, a predisposition for diabetes and obesity are two causes for gestational diabetes.  Other causes include a pregnancy at an age older than 25 years of age, having a prior pregnancy to a large child and being of African American or Hispanic descent.

Sugar in urine during pregnancy can be a sign of a greater problem, gestational diabetes.  Gestational diabetes can lead to complications with the pregnancy.  In very rare instances, gestational diabetes can lead to a miscarriage or death during pregnancy.  The numbers for pregnant women running the risk of developing gestational diabetes is small, approximately between 2-7%, but it is considered to be one of the most prevalent problems relating to pregnancy.

Though sugar in urine during pregnancy may not be unusual because of activity with the hormones, there are ways to avoid anything worse developing from it.  Maintain a healthy diet without excess carbohydrates.  Watch the sugar intake as well.  If weight is a concern, take measures to counter any issues during pregnancy.  Try walking as a means of reducing excess weight that is not related to the pregnancy.  A healthy lifestyle will do wonders and reduce any risks during the delivery.
