Medications Are Good News For Patients In 2009, the condition of diabetes has seen not only one new diabetes medication, but several have been approved and distributed for the market. Though there are already many medications, the advent of a new age of diabetes has spawned the research and manufacture of more. Diabetes medications can be used to assist insulin in allowing blood sugar to pass through the cell membranes of the body. Others can also reduce the chances of suffering from a symptom related to type 2 diabetes known as hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). New Diabetes Medications Cycloset-FDA approved in 2009, Cycloset is a new prescription drug released to aid in regulating blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients. Cycloset works by raising dopamine activity in the brain, which, in turn, resets the body's biological clock. In effect, this improves the metabolism in the body. Cycloset also lowers the risk of heart problems that are normally related to type 2 diabetes (heart attack, strokes). Side effects include drowsiness, nausea, headaches and vomiting. Januvia-taken orally, januvia is the first of a new class of drugs (DPP-4 inhibitors). It reduces blood glucose levels by blocking an enzyme called dipeptidyl peptidase (or DPP-4). It works after meal by breaking down the proteins that stimulate the cells that are responsible for the production of insulin. Once they are blocked, released insulin can work for a greater period of time. In turn, the level of blood sugar is reduced. Though this medication has been on the market for a considerable amount of time (2 years), it is the first of a new series of medications that will pave the way for a better future for upcoming generations. Onglyza-onglyza, to be taken orally, reduces the risk of hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes. Hyperglycemia is another term for high blood pressure. Onglyza is the second of two different medications in the DPP-4 inhibitor family. Liraglutide-a glucogon-like peptide one, liraglutide is used as a regulator, stimulating insulin production only when blood sugar levels are higher than normal. It reduces the risk of hyperglycemia. Liraglutide is injected rather than taken orally. It can also aid in weight reduction by significantly reducing cholesterol and lowering appetite. Liraglutide has significantly less side effects than many of its counterparts, showing only minor problems-mostly with the stomach. Byetta-for individuals with type 2 diabetes, byetta is an injected medication that regulates blood glucose levels in the body. Byetta works in the pancreas to help produce insulin. Byetta can contribute to weight loss. Byetta is available in dosages of 10 micrograms. New diabetes medications means innovations in the medication created for patients. Innovations mean a much more comfortable and controlled condition, which means more freedom to play, more freedom to relax, and more freedom to live. Medication can be used to properly regulate blood sugar levels, reduce heart risks and effectively lower weight. All medications should be taken with a combination of a healthy diabetes diet and moderate exercise. Medications should always be taken as prescribed-any alterations in dosages may cause serious health risks. If there are any side effects from new diabetes medications, it is important to notify your doctor or a professional immediately.
