Is
Glucose Tolerance Considered A type Of Diabetes? Impaired fasting blood glucose The fasting state is a period of time that an individual does not eat. This refers to the time that a person is sleeping. During this state, blood glucose levels are lower than any other times of the day mainly because of the lack of carbohydrate intake during this time. A normal fasting blood glucose level is around 80 mg/dl or less. The level that ranges in the impaired fasting glucose level is between 100 and 125 mg/dl. Though higher than normal, it is not at the level of most diabetics, which is around 140 mg/dl or higher. The level of mg/dl is measured after eight hours of fasting. Testing If there are any symptoms of high blood sugar, drowsiness, headaches, dizziness, impaired vision, extreme weight loss, frequent urination or unusually high level of thirst, then it may be time to take an oral glucose tolerance test (OGGT). An oral glucose tolerance test will measure the levels of blood sugar at different periods to determine the body's capability of processing blood glucose. Untreated risks The good news is that impaired glucose tolerance is not diabetes and the symptoms can be reversed. The bad news is that if impaired glucose intolerance continues without being checked or treated, it will lead to diabetes and all the health complications that come with it. Risks to health if disorders of glucose are left untreated include, but are not limited to, kidney disease, kidney failure, cardiovascular issues, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, nerve damage, loss of feeling in legs and extremities (which could lead to amputation) and organ problems (pancreas). Prevention and possible treatment With the numbers so high, it is important to see what causes the problem before a solution can be found. Mass trends in the United States clearly show that diet and lifestyle are large contributing factors to this large scale problem. Prevention begins with each individual. If you are diagnosed with impaired glucose intolerance, then steps must immediately be taken to reverse the problem. Obesity-if obesity is a factor, then take steps to see what you can do to reduce the excess weight. This will include exercising and a change in diet. Also, examine the habits that have led to this problem. Take the necessary steps to break these contributing factors and integrate a healthy lifestyle. Family history-knowing if diabetes is a pattern within the family can be a warning sign to individuals for generations to come. Utilize the information and prevent the risks before it is too late. Impaired glucose tolerance test can be a warning sign to much greater problems that lay ahead if left untreated. The warning signs will reveal if an oral glucose tolerance test is necessary. The test results will show if a change is needed to continue to live a healthy life without the complications and consequences that are related to diabetes. . .
