       Humalog Insulin

Many individuals with diabetes need more insulin to control their blood glucose level than what their bodies can provide-one answer is humalog insulin.  Humalog is injected insulin that is produced by man to create rapid results in controlling high blood glucose levels.  One of the problems with diabetes patients is low blood sugar.  Certain conditions are created with some diabetes patients where a healthy, disciplined diet and moderate exercise are not enough to queue the issue of low blood sugar.  When this occurs, as it can appear very quickly, humalog can be used to counteract the symptoms.

When should humalog be used?

Humalog should be used in the case where the symptoms of diabetes appear.   The advantage to humalog insulin is that the effects begin to take place much faster than human insulin.  Symptoms of low blood sugar levels are:

  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Faintness
  • Headache
  • Hunger
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Confusion

Insulin Dose

Humalog insulin can be obtained in a variety of different ways, depending on the means to use it.  It is distributed in 10 mL. vials and 3 mL. vials. Either one can be used with a syringe or an external insulin pump.  Also, it can be used with prefilled pens.

Insulin delivery device(Pumps)-Most insulin pumps today are compact and can be small enough to fit into a toiletry bag for travel.  Pumps are fast-acting and weigh as little as 4 ounces.  On the average, one set of batteries can last from 4-6 weeks (with rechargeable available).

Pens-Very small and non-evasive, most pens are made to be used once.  Insert the cartridge or vial (some are available with the dose already inserted) and set the spot of injection.  The pen will do the rest with the push of a button.

Syringes-Still the most common method of insertion, the syringe is very inexpensive and a reliable method for individuals who must be supplied with an outside source of insulin.

The dose normally takes about ten minutes to start working, as opposed to other insulin that takes about thirty minutes.  This means that it can be taken during a meal rather than anticipating when a meal is going to be eaten.

Side effects

Insulin itself may cause certain side effects that are different from those that are related to too much or too little needed to regulate blood glucose levels.  It is not unusual for an individual who injects insulin to develop a rash or minor irritation around the area of injection.  The symptoms of low blood sugar are described above.  If the symptoms of low blood sugar are recurring, then it may be necessary to adjust the level of insulin.

Humalog insulin is a reliable source of fast-acting insulin.  It frees patients with diabetes  from worry and creates more freedom by eliminating many steps to prepare for problems that arise with regular insulin.  With Humalog insulin, a person with diabetes has the freedom to exercise at will (with no meals prior), eat at any given time (though a routine is recommended) and have less problems with multiple injections throughout the day.  There is less possibility of certain complications that may arise because of low blood sugar or complications that ensue due to the disease of diabetes.   Though it is not a cure, it is a step in the right direction.
