With diabetes, there may be differing opinions on how many carbs to eat a day.  With each type of diabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes, the amount of carbohydrates will vary as well.  When it comes to health, diet is very important, but when the condition of diabetes is involved, everything that is consumed takes on a new meaning for importance. 

As a rule, how many carbs to eat per day depends on what is eaten.  Meat items (poultry, fish, pork and red meat) are comprised of protein, which should be eaten with carbohydrates, but they do not contain carbohydrates.  The areas that are generally accountable for most carbohydrates in a diet are dairy products, starches and fruits.
Tools for determining how many carbs to eat a day

1600 calorie diet-This is a diet created to limit the intake of a diabetic.  The standard is to consume between 50%-60% of the total count with carbohydrates.  Each gram of carbohydrate equates to about four calories, so the average intake per day of carbohydrates is around 200 grams or 800 calories.   With individuals with gestational diabetes, it may be necessary to add 300 calories to the equation, due to the needs of the unborn child. 

Calorie counter-calorie counters are digital diaries of meal consumption, breaking down the different foods that are eaten and allowing an individual to track the food eaten in a given day.  They can record the intake during a given period, allowing the individual to download the data and use it for tracking any changes in patterns with glucose.
Glycemic Index Chart-this is a chart that rates various foods on a number system:  One having the lowest level of effect of carbohydrates and one hundred having the highest effect of carbohydrates on the blood glucose level.  Foods that are listed with a number of 55 or lower are considered to be healthier foods for an individual with diabetes.

Dietician-a dietician can be a valuable tool when it comes to determining how many carbs a day.  Licensed dieticians will likely focus on the BMI or body mass index, to determine a diet that is suitable for the individual’s needs.  Combined with the condition of diabetes, a menu will be comprised of certain foods that can be traded throughout the day to ensure a healthy level of blood glucose within the body.

There are other possibilities of tools that can assist an individual with counting carbs, but the ones listed above are some of the more common ones in use.  Exercise can be a strong factor in aiding those with diabetes.  Not only will it help to reduce weight for those who are obese, but it can also help with digestion.  This is good news for individuals who are concerned about carbohydrates.  This doesn’t mean that it is permissible to eat a doughnut or ice cream all the time, but it can ensure a balance and a free item on occasion.  Free items are those that don’t apply towards the calorie count of a carb diet (free items can include mineral water, coffee, tea, sugar-free candy, diet soft drinks and other items).  Determining how many carbs to eat in day will require effort on the part of the individual, but it is certain that there is no shortage of tools to assist with the process.
