How Does Glucagon For Diabetes Benefits You?

Though it elevates the level of glucose in the blood, glucagon for diabetes can be beneficial.  People who have been diagnosed with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2, normally have a problem with high levels of blood glucose.  It may seem unusual that anyone who has a problem with high levels of blood glucose would ever need a medication that elevates just that.  There are situations that require an individual to take glucagon for diabetes, but first it is important to understand what it is.

Glucagon for diabetes is a hormone that is naturally created in the pancreas.  Its function within the body is to work with insulin and stabilize the glucose in the blood.  It is a natural glucose stimulator.  As a synthetic drug, it is used to do the same thing.  There may be situations where an individual with diabetes suffers from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), in which case it may be necessary to induce a high level of blood sugar immediately.  This can be caused by an extreme level of physical activity or lack of eating.  Often it is used in a case of emergency only.

Side effects

Nausea or vomiting    It is not uncommon for an individual who has been administered an injection of glucagon to feel these side effects, though they may be from the initial problem of low blood sugar.
Itching    An individual may have an allergic reaction to the glucagon, which may include itching.
Problems breathing    Respiratory problems may also be associated with an allergic reaction.

Forms of glucagon

Glucagon for diabetes may be administered in a number of ways, depending on the situation.  In most cases, an injection will be administered to the adult (or child) in need.  In cases where the individual or child is not conscious, then a drip may be prepared for the glucagon to enter the body intravenously.

Dosage

A normal dosage for adults is one mg.  As mentioned above, this is usually administered through an injection.  Younger children will receive half of that amount (.05 mg.).  The blood sugar levels in either an adult or a child who has suffered from an episode of hypoglycemia should be watched very closely.

Be careful of vials that have been sitting in storage for too long.  They may appear to be discolored or have particles floating around.  Another situation to be aware is if the vials have been stored at extreme temperatures, as this will cause the same effect (discoloration).

Patients with diabetes should be aware of any symptoms of chronic hypoglycemia, and if this is a recurring problem, it may be necessary to adjust medication.  Often, glucagon will not work with this medical condition, and it may be necessary to try another means.

It is important for individuals with diabetes to know and understand the dangers of not following a steady diet and exercising excessively.  Both situations can create a high risk of hypoglycemia, and may even result in loss of consciousness.  If there is a change in any patterns or lifestyle, it may help to consult with a medical professional first.  Therefore, any changes that are necessary for the adjustment can be made.  Glucagon for diabetes is not the only means of elevating blood glucose levels synthetically, as there are other drugs available on the market (diazoxide).
