Take Control With a Diabetes Test

There are many different reasons to receive a diabetes test.  Symptoms may arise that can create cause for alarm.  Symptoms include:  Drowsiness or fatigue, high blood pressure (hypertension), lack of focus or concentration, nausea and low levels of energy.  One factor that can prompt a diabetes test is obesity.  There are a variety of tests that are used to measure different factors that pertain to diabetes.  Take it easy,as testing yourself for diabetes is not complicated.

Blood test-A diabetes blood test is used to monitor blood sugar levels in the body.  There are two types of tests available on the market:  Hemoglobin A1C and SMBG.

1.              A1C1 is a diabetes test that shows an individual's glucose level over the prior eight to twelve weeks.  An A1C test can allow an individual to regulate the blood sugar levels and create goals to strive for every twelve weeks.

2.              SMBG-The second blood test, self-monitoring blood glucose, is used to empower the individual to regulate and adjust blood sugar levels at home.  Depending on the results, changes can be made to medication, diet, exercise and/or lifestyle.

Urine test-A urine test can be used to test for either kidney disease or hyperglycemia, both of which are conditions that occur due to diabetes.

1.              For the kidney, the test is usually performed by a health care professional.  It measures the protein level in the urine (microalbuminuria).  Microalbuminura is a result of trace amounts of albumin are detected in the urine.  The result if untreated could be kidney failure.

2.              For hyperglycemia, a urine sample is taken and tested to see if the blood sugar level is too high.  Also, the test can reveal if there is evidence of ketones (fatty byproduct used for energy by the body in the absence of insulin).  Tests for hyperglycemia can be found at the pharmacy and purchased over the counter as well.

Pregnancy diabetes test-There are two types of tests available to determine if a pregnant individual has a condition called gestational diabetes.

1.              The Glucose Challenge Screening Test is one that is administered normally between the sixth and seventh month of pregnancy.  It only requires an appointment.  The pregnant individual drinks glucose, and, after a short period of time, she has blood drawn.  This will reveal how the body is processing sugar.  If the result shows positive (or that the body is not processing sugar), then there may be another test given.

2.              The Glucose Tolerance Test is different from the first test in that it is important to prepare before arriving for the appointment.  There is to be no intake of food or liquid 14 hours prior to the test.  In addition, the pregnant individual is required to eat a minimum of 150 mg. of carbohydrates per day for at least three days leading up to the test.  Once she arrives, she is required to draw blood for testing and drink a large quantity of glucose.  Blood is drawn every hour for the three hours after consuming the glucose.

Your doctor should be sensitive to the issue of whether or not you have a health insurance. If in case you don't ,he should be willing to suggest a less expensive test for diabetes other than the expensive GTT.

If you are taking any medication ,your doctor should also order liver enzyme tests periodically to ensure that you are not being injured by thr drugs you are taking. If you are on metformin, then you should have your B-12 checked every few years.

Another diabetes test involve the testing of the pulses of your ankles. To test the nerves in your feet, your doctor  uses a filament or turning fork.

A diabetes home test can empower the individual to take control of his/her life.  Also, a diabetes test can discover complications that would otherwise continue to create a more damaging situation for the individual's health.  It is important to visit a healthcare professional to seek a test if any of the above conditions exist, or if there are symptoms that are not normal.  It may prevent future complications.
