The Prevalance Of Diabetes in China

As China has emerged as a global power economically, the problem of diabetes in China has also surfaced as a major concern for the people.  China has a population that has surpassed 1 billion (1.3 billion as of 2008), and though the data is difficult to compile with complete accuracy, China may have surpassed India as the leading country with a diabetic population with an estimated 40 million.  It is estimated that over 1 million people per year are added to the statistic of being diabetic in China.  Not only is this a growing concern for the people, but it also generates a major concern for the healthcare of the population as a whole.

Factors that contribute to diabetes in China

Rapid change in lifestyle-the modernization of China has brought about many complications in an ancient civilization.  The influx of Western food has created a large issue with obesity over the past twenty years, and the results are becoming prevalent.

Disparity between healthcare and needs-The Chinese healthcare system is ill-equipped to handle the enormous increase in diabetics.  The number of deaths related to diabetes has tripled since 2002.

Lack of proper diagnosis-It is estimated that only 15% of the population of diabetics in China is actually being diagnosed.  This means that there is a major portion of the population who are not receiving the care they need to survive, which includes daily injections of insulin.

Changing the problem of diabetes in China

In order to resolve the issue, it must be approached from the early stages of life.  In China, it is reported (Reuters), "More than one in five children were classified as obese and over 2% suffered from type 2 diabetes."  Type 1 diabetes is an inherent disease, one that is genetically linked to ancestors.  Type 2 diabetes is primarily caused by environmental circumstances, and it used to be more prevalent with adults.  It has become a growing concern that, not just in China, but in most industrialized countries, more and more children and teens have been diagnosed with it.  Again, as noted before, an extreme change in diet is largely the reason for such a change, but higher stress, decreased physical activity and a shift towards a more sedentary lifestyle is to blame as well.

With such a large country, change may not come as quickly as needed.  Bayer Healthcare, the German pharmaceutical company, has teamed with the Ministry of Health and the Chinese Medical Doctor Association in an effort to assist those in need of healthcare related to diabetes.  Their efforts are organized to include 31 different cities across China.  Aid will consist of ongoing education and training doctors.  These efforts will fall in line with a three year, 850 billion yuan medical system reform package.

Diabetes in China must be addressed, as the numbers are reaching epidemic proportions.  In a time when walls are down, it is time for awareness and hope.  Diabetes in China will only be resolved with global understanding and assertiveness.  Educating the young is a large step towards a better future, but taking the action to change the issues and create a better future are more than necessary at this point.
