A Home Test is Essential With Diabetes

A diabetes home test will allow an individual to monitor his/her blood glucose level to know if it is necessary to inject insulin, eat or take medication.  It is a life regulator.  Research indicates that by the year 2000, over 171 million people around the world had diabetes.  It is easy to see the need for a diabetes home test as this growing epidemic seems to have no end in sight.

There are two types of Diabetes home test kits:  Reagent strips and blood glucose monitors.

A Reagent strip is covered with glucose oxidase (an enzyme that interacts with glucose).  The individual places a drop of blood on the strip, which results in the strip changing color in accordance to the level of glucose from the blood.  The color change can be referred to a chart that shows the amount of glucose in the blood.  Though Reagent strips are effective, they do not give an exact measurement of the amount of glucose in the blood.  The Reagent strip can be used in combination with a glucose monitor to provide a more accurate result.

A blood glucose monitor is the most accurate diabetes home test kit.  The test involves using a lancet to poke the finger (or another area).  A small amount of blood is smeared on the strip to place into the meter for a digital glucose reading.  There are a number of different types of home kits available on the market.  Differences include speed of process (faster reading), different types of lancets (many can be used in locations other than the finger) and size.

The Reagent strip ,one touch test strips and the blood glucose meter both provide immediate results.  Though not as accurate as a lab test (approximately 10% less accurate), the individual can receive a quick reading to make an adjustment in terms of insulin, diet and exercise that will counter the reading level.

Diabetes home tests are not normally used for women who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes.  In most cases, one of two tests is given:  Oral glucose tolerance test and the three-hour glucose tolerance test.  Both of these tests are administered in office rather than at home.  An oral glucose test is usually given between the week 24 and week 28.  It consists of drinking a set amount of glucose and monitoring how the body processes it.  The three-hour glucose test is a little more complex.  A fasting period is necessary prior to taking the test.  The mother is given a higher dose of glucose than that of an oral glucose test.  Once the glucose is consumed, a three-hour process of testing follows.  The results will determine how well the mother is processing glucose at different times.  This test is given if the results of an oral glucose test came back abnormal.  Regular appoints can be set to monitor the glucose level throughout the pregnancy if gestational diabetes is diagnosed.

The testing procedure is the same for both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.  The difference may only lie within the age of the recipient.  Though the types of diabetes vary in condition, the testing will reveal the same information, which is vital to both types of diabetes-the glucose reading.

A diabetes home test kit can be the difference for an individual to take control of his/her condition of diabetes.  It can save time with the ease of taking a reading at home.  It can notify the individual if he/she is doing everything according to schedule.
