Information on a Diabetes Blood Test

A diabetes blood test can determine if a person has diabetes.  If an individual has already been diagnosed, a diabetes blood test can inform an individual the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood.  This can be helpful in monitoring and adjusting different aspects of living.  It may include medication, diet and/or exercise.  It is important that every single person who has been diagnosed with diabetes have some means of testing the blood sugar level.  Without a diabetes blood test, diabetes will control your life, rather than you controlling it.

The Hemoglobin A1C test is one method of monitoring the level of sugar in the blood over a period of time.  "At the American Diabetes Association's 69th annual meeting in New Orleans, an international committee of experts announced their consensus that the A1C assay is an accurate way to diagnose diabetes in adults and children, but not in pregnant women."* Also known as glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), the diabetes blood test determines the amount of glucose in the blood over a period of two to three months.  More specifically, the test measures a percentage of glycosylated hemoglobin in the blood.  Glycated hemoglobin is a form of hemoglobin (pigment in the blood that carries oxygen to the tissues) used primarily to identify the average plasma glucose concentration over a given amount of time.  The A1C test can also be used after an individual has been diagnosed with diabetes to regulate the blood sugar level.

A blood glucose testing  is suggested if a physician suspects that an individual has diabetes.  It may be from unusual bouts of fatigue, change in eating habits, obesity and other related symptoms.  It can also be used to discover hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, as well as monitor glucose levels in an individual who has already been diagnosed with diabetes.  There are several methods of administering a blood glucose test:  fasting, random and post meal.  All of these tests are factored as part of an oral glucose tolerance test (series of tests).  The test may include one or more of the above listed.  This type of diabetes blood test is recommended for pregnant woman who may be at risk for gestational diabetes.

Self-monitored blood glucose tests are available to those who need to monitor their blood sugar levels more closely.  Some individuals may have the need to monitor as much as three or more times per day.  This method consists of pricking the finger with a needlelike tool and smearing the blood on a strip.  Then, the strip is inserted into a meter which reads the level of glucose in the blood.

At one point in time, a urine screening test was used to determine if a patient has diabetes, but this system has been largely replaced with the above methods.  That is not to say that it isn't being used, but it normally is given in conjunction with another test.

Diabetes blood tests are an important aspect of life for someone who either has symptoms or has been diagnosed.  It can be the difference in adding longevity to the future, and it can be the difference in a high quality lifestyle as opposed to one of poor quality.
