Pregnancy is a long process that can create a lot of problems with it.  One of the complications that may arise with pregnancy is gestational diabetes.Gestation is another word for pregnancy .Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that begins during pregnancy.  In other words, diabetes and pregnancy are a deadly combination.  It is important to know all of the aspects of gestational pregnancy before jumping to any conclusions-knowing and understanding diabetes and pregnancy can prevent any dangers that may cause health risks.Also unlike other type of diabetes-which last a lifetime- gestational diabetes almost always goes away after you give birth. This will keep the mother and the baby safe during and after pregnancy.  There is a higher risk of death to the baby during birth if the mother has gestational diabetes, and it is left untreated. Early blood sugar test in pregnancy is highly recommended.

Symptoms of diabetes and pregnancy are usually not severe, and sometimes may not even be noticeable.  These symptoms include, but are not limited to, fuzzy or blurry sight, dehydration, mild weight loss (with a heightened appetite), frequent need to urinate, sugar in urine during pregnancy,queasiness and infections (particularly to the vaginal area, the bladder and the epidermis). 

During the pregnancy, the symptoms may not necessarily be severe to the mother, but symptoms that carry over to the baby may be increasingly dangerous.  These symptoms include, but are not limited to, trauma at birth (due to an increased size of the baby), discoloration of the baby (yellow or jaundice), below normal level of blood sugar (also known as hypoglycemia).  The risks are higher during the birth, which can include hypertension (high blood pressure) and in obscure cases even death to the mother.

Gestational diabetes diet is an important factor in maintaining a healthy term.  Carbohydrates play a major role when it comes to diet for pregnancy and diabetes.  Carbohydrates transform into glucose once they enter the body.  Therefore, keeping a close watch on the intake of carbohydrates will create a balance and empower the mother to maintain a healthy term.  Carbohydrates are derived from starch in foods-breads, potatoes, pastas and grains.  Sugar is another source, along with certain vegetables (and fruits) and dairy products. 

Since carbohydrates are so important in the balance of glucose in the body, then the focus of prevention of diabetes and pregnancy should be on the intake of those foods.  Not only is it important to regulate the amount, but also the time.  Develop a pattern of eating a certain amount of carbohydrates at the same time daily.  This will make it easier for the body to regulate sugar intake and keep the levels healthy and out of danger.
After the pregnancy, glucose level can often return to normal; although, women with gestational diabetes should be carefully monitored with regularly scheduled visits to the doctor.  Many women are susceptible to diabetes within a period of five to ten years after delivering the baby.  Overweight women are even more at risk.

Prenatal visits are important in reducing any risks with pregnancy.  Also, an oral glucose tolerance test should be taken between week 24 and week 28 to screen for gestational diabetes.  Being aware of carbohydrate intake and creating a pattern of intake during pregnancy will reduce any effects to the fetus and the mother during term.  Mild exercise during pregnancy and after will reduce weight gain, further preventing the risk of diabetes.
