                                                               Is Cinnamon Good For Diabetes?
         
There is an ongoing debate whether or not cinnamon for diabetes help lowers blood sugar . True cinnamon refers to Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum).  Other related species are Cassia (Cinnamomum aromaticum) and Saigon cinnamon (Cinnamomum loureiroi).  There was a study conducted that tested the theory of cinnamon and its benefits for those with diabetes.  The objective of the study was to determine whether cinnamon improves blood glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes. 

The Test

There were three separate trials that evaluated the effects of cinnamon Cassia supplementation in patients with type 2 diabetes.  In 1990, Dr R. Anderson a researcher from The Human Nutrition Research Center of the FDA together with the USDA conducted a series of test on thirty Pakistani men and thirty Pakistani women with type 2 diabetes .They were divided into six groups at random.  Groups one through three were given a certain amount of cinnamon per day (group one-1 gram/day, group two-3 grams, group three-6 grams), and groups four through six were given placebos of the same doses of their respective groups one through three.  The test of cinnamon for diabetes lasted a period of 40 days.  After the final day, there were reductions in serum glucose levels with those who had actually received the cinnamon for diabetes (groups 1-3).  The researchers concluded that cinnamon (Cassia) safely reduced glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. 
It was found, afterwards, that DR Anderson's test was impartial in the fact that he has a patent on the compound found to be the active ingredient in cinnamon.

Does Cinnamon really lowers Blood Sugar?

A study performed by  researchers from University of Oklahoma showed that there were no differences in the groups' average levels of blood sugar,cholesterol or insulin. Moreover a few people who have tested whether cinnamon lowers blood glucose levels have reported that their blood pressure go up after taking cinnamon.


Dangers of Using Cinnamon For Lowering Blood Sugar

Are there any benefit to using a natural substance such as cinnamon for lowering blood glucose levels ?Many companies selling cinnamon in tablets,pills,capsules or extracts form do so for profit .There were no research performed to provide proof that such natural supplementation do lower blood sugar.
.  Homeopathic methods, as cinnamon for blood sugar, are constantly being tested to reduce the dangers of side effects and possibly create a healthier solution for those who are at risk for life altering effects of prescription medications.  Cinnamon for diabetes, though tested, may vary from individual to individual.  Weight may be a factor to take into consideration.  Also, nothing can take the place of healthy living habits-controlled diet, portioned servings, specific, routine times to eat, exercise and reduced stress. 

Keep in mind that there may be a danger to using cinnamon for diabetes-an allergic reaction may be the most harmful.  For this reason, it is important to check with a trained medical physician to see if using a substance such as cinnamon is the best alternative for your needs.  Also, using cinnamon for diabetes is meant in no way to replace an ongoing insulin treatment that may already be in place.  Substitution without consultation may result in severe health risks.  If you check with a physician, then experiment with low levels of cinnamon over a lengthy period of time to see if there are any minor changes.  Consult a physician before changing the level of intake of cinnamon to anything more than 2 grams.
